A Fistful of Dollars launched the spaghetti Western and catapulted Clint Eastwood to stardom. Based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 samurai picture Yojimbo, it scored a resounding success (in Italy in 1964 and the U.S. in 1967), as did its sequels, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The advertising campaign promoted Eastwood’s character–laconic, amoral, dangerous–as the Man with…
Perhaps only Pedro Almodóvar could come up with a story about a mental patient who stalks and kidnaps an ex-porn star–and turn it into a tender love story. But that’s exactly what happens in Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, a lively installment from the Spanish director’s wacky middle period (after the scruffy early films, and before his mature melodramas). Two of Almodóvar’s sexiest stars, Antonio Ban…

Though The Devil’s Backbone was advertised as a horror movie in the States, it’s really more of a drama that happens to have ghosts in it. During the Spanish Civil War, young Carlos is abandoned at a completely isolated orphanage. The tensions therein have been building for years, exa…
