Is the horse/boat/jeep ride from Monteverde to Arenal good?

I am going to Costa Rica in 2 days and was thinking about doing the horse/boat/jeep ride from Monteverde to Arenal. The horse part is 3 HOURS LONG!! Has anyone done this? Is it good? Or will i get tired of riding the horse after an hour?
ya, i’m not an experienced horseback rider. I’ve ridden a horse once in my life at a camp. :p

If you are comfortable on a horse and an experienced rider – 3 hours shouldn’t be anything. If you are an inexperienced rider – 3 hours will be miserable. I took the jeep-boat-jeep when I went across to MonteVerde and it was very comfy and very beautiful. I wouldn’t recommend the horse part unless your good at it.

Edit: In that case, don’t go with the horse. You may pick it up quicker than me, but from what I understand it takes a while to figure out the rhythm and not destroy your backside.

How much spending money to bring to Costa Rica?

Hello!
I am traveling for the first time to Costa Rica Feb and March. I am traveling alone, looking to get away from new york city life and , staying in Puerto Viejo and Montezuma. My flight and places are already paid for.

I am wondering how much money should I plan to have as petty spending cash when down there? (food, going out, busses)

For the most part ill be chilling, and writing, surf board rental, and cooking at home (so groceries expenses) then i probably go mingle for dinner and drinks 2-3 times a week. But nothing too crazy, this is more of a mild chill get away for me.

so for 2 months whats a decent amount of spending money to have saved up?

If you are going for two months, I would bring about $2000 spending money. I know some are going to disagree, but there may be things you want to do beside surfing, dinning out and having a few drinks.

Two month is a long time to just chill on the beach. You may want to chill by going sports fishing for a day, do a few days of ziplining, take a full day of white water rafting and many other adventures that cost. The problem (a good problem) of CR is there is just a ton of things to do, so be prepared.

The last thing you want is to be down there and run out of money.

Costa Rica, Day 5
Costa Rica, Day 5
Itineraries for Costa Rica…?

I am planning a 5 day trip to Costa Rica in MAy. We are looking at flying to San Jose, then going to Liberia and taking day trips from there. Any suggestions? Also any hints on car rental or other travel advice? my friend and I have never been to Costa Rica, though we do speak Spanish so the language shouldn’t be a problem.
Libereria is just an idea as a “home base” we are also looking at doing a whirl wind tour. We would like to see a volcano, tour a national park, a beach and see what else we can discover. We will have at least 4 full days to explore. Thanks for the information!

Personally, a 5 day trip is not enough time. If you go to Liberia and depending on when your plane arrives in San Jose, figure a day driving there and a day driving back, so you waste about 2 days on the road, which would only give you time to see the Arenal volcano, the hot springs for one day, then head to the beach (Tamarindo) and enjoy a couple of days there. Maybe you would have some time to do some ziplinning.

My suggestion, go to Jaco, which is only a couple hr drive from San Jose, and enjoy the beach, nightlife, surf, zipline, eco tours etc and then head down to Manual Antonio (about a hours drive) and see one of the best beaches in Costa Rica. Your time would not be spend driving, but enjoying.

On a car rental, make sure you inspect the car first, get the insurance and be careful driving, the roads are not like what you are used to in the US,

Have a great time and enjoy your trip
